The Lemon House

The villa’s lemon house is one of the most fascinating elements to observe, a place that combines functionality and elegance.
Built in 1883 at the behest of Count Guglielmo Claricini Dornpacher, this structure was designed to protect the lemon trees during the rigours of winter.
The tradition of lemon houses, which has its roots in historic European villas, spread mainly in Italy, France and England, where these structures were essential for the cultivation and protection of delicate plants, such as lemons, which need an environment sheltered from the cold.
In the Venetian villas in particular, the lemon house became a symbol of refinement, a greenhouse intended not only for protection but also for ornamental beauty, combining aesthetics and functionality.

Although simple, the building is distinguished by its elegant façade, characterised by four large windows framed by pilasters, which rise on a plinth and support the pitched roof. This sober and refined style fits harmoniously into the context of the Italian-style garden.
Inside, lemons are kept in large terracotta vases decorated with the coat of arms of the family. During the warmer seasons, these vases are elegantly arranged along the edges of the main road of the Italian garden, adding a touch of colour and vitality to the entire green space.
Another scenic element within the lemon house is the Ficus repens, an evergreen climber that covers the surfaces with its shiny, compact foliage, adding a decorative aspect to the structure. This climbing shrub, native to Asia and China, is perfectly suited to the environment of the lemon house, helping to create a unique atmosphere of natural rigour and beauty.
The lemon house is not only a refuge for lemon plants, but also a corner full of charm and tradition. It bears witness to Nicolò de Claricini Dornpacher’s passion for gardening, combining functionality and aesthetics in a simple and harmonious way.
Even today, the structure retains its practical role, contributing to the charm of the garden and reflecting the attention to detail that has always characterised the care for greenery in this villa.
